What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific locations in the body. That’s why it is also sometimes referred to as “needling”.

The locations of the needles will be selected by the acupuncturist to create the changes required in the body.

This is a relaxing and painless procedure.

Other techniques

Beyond needling, there are other techniques from Chinese Medicine often associated with acupuncture.

Cupping

Cups can be made from glass or plastic and they are placed over an affected area of the body using suction. This can be through flame or through use of a pump. It pulls the tissue up into the cup, allowing an increase in blood flow to the area. It is a safe and painless treatment that helps with muscle pain, stiffness or injury.

Moxa

Moxa is a derivative of the Chinese mugwort leaves and  is a soft woolly substance used in Chinese Medicine. The way it is used in practice can be in a variety of forms, but is always lit and placed either directly on the skin or over acupuncture points or channels. It’s heat permeates the skin to affect the flow of Qi and Blood in the area being treated.
